The Powerful One

Dheer was a young man in his twenties, just out of the college. He got a job in the power company at Durgapur, and was earning lots of money. He was happy with his job. Everyday, he woke up in the morning and had some breakfast and left for his office, rather his workplace. Because, it was the boiler area where he worked, rather than being an official place to write letters and circulars. Of course, he had an office to sit and relax, but no paperwork, and no such stuff that did anything remotely close to being official.

Years after working in the hot boiler, he felt that those engineers who controlled the working of a boiler and turbines were luckier than him. They enjoyed the ambience of an air conditioned room, yet were more powerful because the entire control of these huge equipments were under their control. So, after much thinking, he convinced his bosses to get him posted in the control room.

One month later, he got shifted to this new department, and started learning these new instruments that in turn controlled the huge boiler. He was impressed to see these amazingly small equipments managing such giant a workforce. He got accustomed to these new timings. He had to work in shifts here. Some days, he would have to work from 6 AM in the mornings to 2 in the noon. On some other days, he had to work from 2 PM to 10 PM and on other occasions,  it would be the 10 PM to 6 AM slot. Although, this brought a change in his daily routine, but he was quite happy with the room, the clean, cool ambience. Now, he had computers at his workplace, he had telephones at his workplace and many other things, that weren't there earlier.

Dheer worked there for one year, when he realised that the entire workforce of the company depended on some other areas of the company. One day, one of their equipments got damaged, and so, he had to ask the Contracts department to get a new one instead of this damaged one. As, he saw the way the contracts department worked, he started getting bored with this controlling of the boiler and equipments. He felt, those who were actually buying these equipments that they were using, were more luckier than them. They enjoyed air conditioned rooms, as well as enjoyed extreme power of buying equipments of such high precision for the company. They were really some powerful people in the company.

Without the help of these people who bought their equipments, the control engineers couldn't perform their job at all. So, he understood, it was time for him to try his fate in the Contracts department. He got his bosses convinced for a transfer. Now, he had a room for his own self, he had signing authority on things to be bought. He was powerful indeed. With one digital signature of his, things could be bought and sold. He worked there for eight months, when all of a sudden, he forgot his password for signing the documents digitally. He called up one of his colleagues from the Information Technology department and got his password reset by them.

Very soon, the communication network inside the office area was under renovation and so, nothing on the computer worked. Dheer was losing his patience because he had to approve quite many documents for purchase. His boss came up and said to him that there are superusers who could do their work. These were the employees from the IT department who could do anybody else's online work themselves. In other words, these people, were all powerful.

Dheer got interested to know more about the IT department, and would soon change his mind and convince his bosses for a transfer over to the IT department, because he felt, this would be the most powerful place in the entire company.

He came to the department,  started working there and was given the work of data maintenance of the plant running parameters. Now, he had to ensure whether all the generation parameters were coming appropriately or not. So, he got used to this new department and slowly got more and more involved with other tasks also. One day, the power plant suddenly stopped, and his online generation parametes stopped coming. On asking his old colleagues, about what had happened he came to know that there was some problem in the boiler and as long as the water walls were not mended, the problem would continue.

He knew what had happened. He had already done that job some five years back. He realised that the IT people were powerful, but not so much to mend the water wall tubes that had leaked inside the boiler. He realised that the contracts department could buy new water wall tubes for the boiler but possibly wouldn't be able to mend them. He also understood that the control engineers could only work if the boiler had been in the best of form.

Now, that he realised that everybody had an equal importance in a co-existing scenario, he requested his bosses to get him back from where he had come. He was again posted back to the maintenance of the boiler and got the leakage of the tubes mended. He worked in that department for the rest of his tenure without any complaints or worries.
